Delhi Dynamos extended their unbeaten run to five-games in the Hero Indian Super League Season 4 as they demolished Mumbai City FC 5-1 at the JLN Stadium, New Delhi. The thrashing meant that Mumbai’s hopes of making it to the play-offs came to an end.
Goals from Nandhakumar Sekar, Matias Mirabaje, Manuel Arana, Kalu Uche and Lallianzuala Chhangte ensured that Dynamos maintain their good run of form towards the end of the season and further get their revenge over Mumbai who had earlier beaten the Lions 4-0 at the Mumbai Football Arena.
Coach Miguel Angel Portugal once again rotated his squad owing to fixture congestion. David Ngaihte, Nandhakumar, Pratik Chowdhary, Edu Moya, Matias, Arana all returned to the playing XI while top scorer Kalu Uche was handed a rest.
It took the hosts just 5 minutes to open the scoring as Nandha tapped in from close range following Seityasen Singh’s cross to hand the Lions an early advantage.
Mumbai tried to find their way back into the game but the Dynamos defense stood tall. Emana and Balwant tried their luck from outside the box but that rarely troubled Xabi Irureta on goal.
With four minutes left to half-time Mumbai finally found their way past the Delhi defense. Sahil Tavora chipped the ball past Irureta but Pratik came to the rescue as he made an incredible goal-line clearance.
Mumbai continued to press Delhi and five minutes into the second half, their persistence paid off as a mistake by Irureta allowed Everton Santos to score the equaliser.
But Mumbai were dealt with a blow 20 minutes from full-time when Matias struck home an incredible goal from 30-yards out. The Uruguayan who was sent off against Mumbai the last time around got his much needed revenge.
Dynamos though were reduced to 10-men as Pratik got his marching orders following a clumsy foul. Mumbai failed to take advantage and minutes later had their man sent off as well, as Tavora brought down Arana inside the box. The Spanish winger scored from the spot to make it 3-1.
Arana then turned provider to Uche who struck his 11th goal of the season to move ahead of Marcelinho as the club’s all time leading goal scorer.
Chhangte then handed the killer blow as Matias’ incredible pass saw him one-on-one with Amrinder. The diminutive winger rounded off the keeper to score his third goal of the season.
